Angel & Drina

Angel & Drina

By Tess Chodan

Queen Victoria & Prince Albert (aka Angel & Drina)

Original digital image as giclée on archival Hahnemühle hemp paper,

antique entomological specimens, vintage frame, I/X

Each 58 x 50 cm

Married for 21 years and having nine children, at the heart of Victoria and Albert ‘s famous marriage was a deep love bond. A double masquerade work celebrates the iconic pair, and their tattoos reflect their individual interests; Victoria adored hummingbirds, and the Royal Coat of Arms is on her left hand. Her favourite motto was that of the monarch of the United Kingdom, ‘Dieu et Mon Droit’. Albert has a delicate tattoo of an anchor on his cheek, a reference to the HMS Prince Albert, a coastal defence ship built in 1864.

'Tiny Survivals'

I create artworks using antique insect specimens from historical collections:

Butterflies, moths, beetles, dragonflies - and bees, whose delicate wings I gild.

My work celebrates the tradition of collecting, reflects on memory and preservation, fragility and time, and is inspired by the fleeting lives of the natural world. Many of my specimens are over a hundred years old.

I am passionate about connecting my audience with the extraordinary beauty of these ephemeral creatures, in turn leading to a continuing conversation about ecological preservation.

All specimens are strictly non-endangered and sustainably-sourced. All works are unique, numbered and certified.

Build your collection

ART TO LIVE WITH. ART TO LOVE. ART TO COLLECT.

Building an art collection doesn’t have to start with a huge budget or a carefully curated white-walled home.

It starts with one artwork that makes you feel something.

At Circus Gallery, we believe collecting art should be exciting, personal and accessible. Whether you’re buying your first original artwork or adding to an established collection, we’re here to help you discover artists and pieces that you’ll love for years to come.
